Why teach...?

This time of year I always like to take a while to ponder the why's and how's of teaching. It is a challenging career, but endlessly rewarding. This the twenty fifth year of my career, so I may have pondered for longer this Christmas holiday break.

I always get excited when I hear of someone who has become of teacher because they loved the time they spent in my class. That's part of the reason I became a teacher - thank you Mr W you inspired me in Year 8.
I have taught hundreds of students now, but I can see their faces. I remember their struggles and their achievements.
There have been good years, great years, harder years and challenging years. To create a team in a classroom from diverse groups of people is always interesting but rewarding.

Over the years I have received wonderful cards and gifts but the one that was a key part of my ponderings these holidays, I have had for about six years. It was given to me by a very special Year Eight student. Every holiday time I open it up to remind myself why I love this job.

It is a a special little matchbox that contains The Three Things That Hanna Liked About Me...
This gift, handmade and lovely is the reason I teach. To find the Hanna's of the world and inspire them, to have them believe in themselves and to have them able to recognise the good in others.

I teach. What's your Superpower?

2013

Tonight I have just completed my letters to post to my new class. I found this was a really fun and easy way to connect with my students, before school had started. It also helped establish a class culture, and gave a shared experience to talk about on the first day. So this year I am hoping for the same results!
I also collect email addresses via the letter by asking parents to email me so I can create the class group for the year. I have also posted an "information/ welcome" video message on the class blog and have directed the students there also via the letter.

So I guess I am relying on the letter to start a lot of things rolling for Room One!

New purpose for Blog!

I have decided to keep a record of my teaching, research and thinking here. Everyday I spend ages thinking of the best way to present information, inspire my class...I hope that this process will help clarify my thinking even more.
